Theology Student Renews Glenmary Oath

Dennis Oath Renewal
Renewal of Glenmary Oath: Dennis Makokha renews his Glenmary Oath during a June 29 Mass that concluded Glenmary's General Chapter.
The last sentence of the Glenmary Oath proclaimed by Dennis Makokha on Thursday, June 28, 2007 states, “Thus bound in a covenant with the other members in the Glenmary community, I ask for their support and loyalty and pledge to them my own.” This support and loyalty was visible and evident as Dennis was surrounded by the Glenmary community as he renewed his Oath on the last night of Glenmary’s 14th General Chapter. The simple Oath renewal ceremony was the highlight and culmination of the Chapter and it demonstrated the changing and hopeful future of Glenmary as well as the unity of the community which was celebrated during the two weeks of Chapter.

Dennis, who is pursuing missionary priesthood, is the only Glenmary student under temporary Oath so his renewal shows he has great hope and faith in his future as a Glenmary missioner. However, unlike Brother David Henley who, while under temporary Oath for three years before taking his Final Oath, was the only student in any stage of Glenmary formation, Dennis is joined by seven other students currently in formation and seven who will join Glenmary’s prenovitiate this August. As of this writing, an eighth man has completed his application and very well may make the eighth new student this year—therefore doubling Glenmary’s student body in one year.

This energy and hope created by the men pursuing a missionary vocation with Glenmary is led by Dennis, a native of Kenya who has already begun his fifth year with Glenmary.  This summer Dennis has attended Xavier University, New Orleans, where he took a course on African American studies; assisted the Vocation Department by staffing a booth at the National Black Catholic Congress in Buffalo, N.Y., and will be spending the month of August working in Glenmary’s mission in Louisville, Ga.

In September, Dennis will move into his second year at St. Meinrad School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Ind.
