A man who chooses brotherhood commits himself to a life of prayer, celibacy, obedience, and poverty for the sake of his ministry, contributing his skills and talents to the mission effort.
Initially Glenmary brothers were builders, involved in the manual aspects of renovating, repairing or building churches. Today, a brother may just as likely be engaged in caring for the sick or supervising a House of Formation; coaching a little league baseball team or providing religious education for the youth of a mission parish. He may initiate or supervise a variety of outreach programs designed to meet specific needs in the mission area where he is serving.
While Glenmary brothers are very busy men, they consider their ministry to be more about "being" than about "doing"-- being present to share the love of God with the poor, the lonely, the elderly, the youth, the sick and the lost. Read Brother David Henley's own explanation of what brotherhood means to him.
Our Glenmary brothers can be proud of all they have accomplished over the years. Please pray that their ministries will continue to be fruitful. Please pray, too, for more men to accept the call to serve God's people as a Glenmary brother.
