Become a Tithing Parish

Glenmary's home mission ministry is supported through the generosity of donors and friends. These supporters are committed to helping ensure that Glenmary missioners can continue establishing the Catholic Church in counties throughout Appalachia and the South where there is no effective Church presence.

But entire parishes can also become partners in Glenmary's missionary effort through tithing. Those parishes currently tithing a portion of their annual income have chosen to give back to God a portion of what they have received. This committment to tithing—or to giving 10 percent of annual income to charity—is a way for parishes to give back to God in thanksgiving for all the blessings God has bestowed on them.

Some have stated that tithing "helps remind us that God comes first and everything we have comes as gift."

Glenmary asks parishes to consider participating in tithing "because we fully believe our mission is worthy of support," says Father Don Tranel, director of Glenmary's development office. "We offer, in the words of Henri Nouwen, 'the opportunity (for parishes) to put their resources at the disposal of the Kingdom.'

"We are 'announcing our vision and inviting other people into our mission.'"

The mission into which Glenmary invites tithing parishes is about serving those Catholics living in mission areas of the United States as well as those without a church home and most especially the poor.

"Love the poor, the sick and the helpless, and attend to them. They are God's influentials. They are his aristocrats. He loves them. If you are known in your mission community as the contact for all the poor and unfortunate of the place, you could not have a more honorable title on earth or one that would make you more welcome in the courts of heaven." - See more at: http://www.glenmary.org/bishop-anniversary/#sthash.gT0fK7PY.dpuf

Today, Glenmary missioners continue to work to fulfill the instruction of the society's founder and invite parishes in the United States to join with them in their ministry to: "Love the poor, the sick and the helpless, and attend to them. They are God's influentials. They are his aristocrats. He loves them. If you are known in your mission community as the contact for all the poor and unfortunate of the place, you could not have a more honorable title on earth or one that would make you more welcome in the courts of heaven."
