Stories of Missioners

Introducing the Many Facets of Home Mission Ministry

Some stories, because they represent so well the work of Glenmary, are featured even when the missioner has moved on. For current assignments, check the Glenmary Directory.

Brother David Henley
Glenmary's newest member spent the summer of 2004 in Mississippi working to improve the living and working conditions for poultry workers in the area. Brother David is committed to reaching out to all those who don't have a voice.

Father Larry Goulding
Father Larry said there's not much going on in his two South Georgia missions—and in the same breath said he's two weeks behind! Besides nurturing the Catholics in his mission parishes, he was involved with the greater community and provided outreach to the growing Hispanic population in the missions.

Sister Alies Therese
What difference does a Catholic church make? This Glenmary pastoral coordinator leads the Catholic Community of Choctaw County in Mississippi, the only interracial church in this rural area.

Brother Mike Springer
Brother Mike is finding that his gifts fit very well with the needs he is identifying in one of Glenmary's newest missions in Logan County, W.Va. He lives and serves as a parish brother at St. Barbara Church. His work includes teaching religious education classes, visiting nursing homes and working in literacy education.

Father Dennis Holly
There's a new face in Macon County, Tenn. In August 2003 Father Dennis Holly moved to the county seat, Lafayette, to become the first resident Catholic pastor of the local Catholic Church. His first priority is visiting the 30-35 Catholic families in this county of 4,000 people.

Brother Ken Woods
Brother Ken Woods, and his diverse ministry in Western Kentucky, is just one example of the ways the vocation of brotherhood is lived out in the home missions. The whole county benefited from his ministry of presence.
Father Bob Rademacher
Into his 80s, Father Bob has left his mark as an activist in Southwest Virginia.
Father Vic Subb
Scripture tells us to welcome the stranger among us. Father Vic Subb and the members of two South Georgia missions did just that as they "provided a lifeline" to those living in local migrant camps.

Father Charlie Hughes
Despite his deafness, Father Charlie, stayed active as a senior member living in a Glenmary mission in Georgia. He sees not the limitations of his affliction, but the graces. In the silence, he has
“learned to be conscious of the Lord’s presence to and within me.”

Br. Terry O'Rourke Brother Terry O'Rourke
Imagine organizing and distributing 14,000 pounds of food to a hungry county in Mississippi. Brother Terry does it on the third Friday of every month.
