Call to Mission    January 2010
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fr. Dominic Duggins The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which we celebrated on January 10, marks Jesus' initiation into public ministry and our recommitment to follow in his footsteps. Since 1976, it has also signaled the beginning of National Vocation Awareness Week for U.S. Catholics. This week highlights the gift of Church vocations. In addition, it's a timely reminder of our responsibility to pray for and encourage young people as they discern the possibility of a call to priesthood and religious life.
Glenmary is very blessed to have young men in various stages of formation on their way to becoming priests and brothers, while a number of others have inquired and expressed interest. But these men need our prayers to help them on their journeys. Also, by inviting other young people to consider a Church vocation, we may be raising an option that has just not occurred to them.
Thank you for your ongoing financial and prayer support of Glenmary's work. Here's wishing you and your family a very healthy and happy 2010!
—Father Dominic Duggins, Development Director
Father Don Tranel Response to Crisis Put Arkansas Mission 'on Map'
When he arrived in 2006, Glenmary Father Don Tranel was the first resident pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption mission in Booneville, Ark., in 30 years. He had a vision for the future. But he couldn't foresee the turning point for which he was preparing his congregation.
At this peaceful site established over 30 years ago in Eastern Kentucky, the retreat-like immersion experience blends service, education, prayer, reflection and sharing in an environment of simple living. As the saying goes, "The Glenmary Farm grows people." Today it draws high school, college, and young-adult groups from all over the country.
Sister Alies Therese Long-Distance Adoption Connects Congregations
A Dubuque, Iowa, parish first adopted a Eupora, Miss., mission in 2006 through Glenmary's Adopt-a-Mission program-which invites willing, able congregations to help struggling Glenmary missions through prayer, financial aid and encouragement. The relationship has "clicked" and grown, and "both communities benefit greatly," says Sister Alies Therese, the mission's pastoral coordinator.
