Summer Bounty: A Crop of Farm Managers
Departing summer staff joined arriving Farm managers to host the Aug. 9 dedication of the new chapel. They served a great picnic meal of burgers and hotdogs, corn and tomatoes from the garden and much more. From left, summer staff: Jon Rey (a Maryknoll seminarian from the Philippines), Matt Dooley and Kristen McClurg. Joining Matt for the year program are Don Malewitz, who has brought groups to the Farm from Sienna Heights University, and Rebecca Coomer, a native of South Portsmouth, Ky.

Hello, Matt! Goodbye, Bryan!
Father Jerry Dorn visited Vanceburg to commission Matt Dooley (right) as a new Farm Manager. Matt is from Sparta, N.J., where he worked as a funeral home director and was very involved in youth ministry in his parish.The commissioning event was also a celebration of Bryan Reaka's contributions over the past year. Bryan (left) will be leaving the position of Farm Manager in July. |

March Madness: Collin Returns; Bryan Shaves!

Collin, a former Farm manager now a student at Ohio State, returned over his own spring break to help Bryan during the busiest month at the Farm.

Ice Storm Triggers Massive Cleanup Effort
Volunteers from Loyola University (Chicago), St. Anselm College and South Dakota State University chopped up trees and branches downed by the ice storm which hit Feb. 15 and kept the Farmand much of Lewis Countyin the dark for 11 days.

Cleaning Up After Farmhouse Fire
Volunteers from Marquette University High School help clear rubble from the Old Farmhouse fire. The new chapel planned for this site will incorporate the stones from the chimney, seen here. The chimney stones are all that remain after the Dec. 5 fire that destroyed "the place where peace came and stayed."

New Chapel to Rise From Ashes
Glenmary leadership decided Jan. 8 to build a new chapel on the site of the Old Farmhouse, incorporating the stones from the chimney, all that remained after the Dec. 5 fire. Groundbreaking is projected for sometime in the spring of 2003.

Old Farmhouse Burns to Ground
Early on the cold, snowy morning of Dec. 5, 2002, a passerby spotted flames coming from the Old Farmhouse at the Glenmary Farm outside of Vanceburg, Ky., and the local fire department was called. But, given the nature of the structure and the intensity of the fire, nothing could be saved. Fortunately, no one was hurt. All volunteers and staff were safely sleeping in the bunk house and staff house. For more information. |

New Farm Manager
Bryan Reaka (center) joined Joe Grosek (left) in September as a Farm manager. Bryan replaces Elizabeth Altstaetter (right) who completed her Americorps year in September. A native of Belleville, Ill., Bryan has settled into the Vanceburg community and is looking forward to his year of volunteering at the Farm. Elizabeth is presently living outside of Cleveland, Ohio, and is coordinating the volunteer program for The Missionary Cenacle Volunteers.

Spring Floods
Heavy rains in March caused flooding throughout Kentucky. This photo was taken at the Farm the week of March 17 while groups from these schools were volunteering: the University of Wisconsin (LaCrosse); the University of Wisconsin (Oshkosh) and Williams College Newman Association (Danvers, Mass.).

A January snow storm turned Vanceburg into a winter wonderland. It wasn't Utah, but that didn't stop this student from Fordham from taking off down the hill "skeleton-style" (head first)! |
