Glenmary Farm welcomes third Manager

Jason Muhlenkamp a native of Maria Stein, Ohio, has accepted the position of Glenmary Farm Manager. In the past, Jason has been employed in a variety of occupations, from warehouse worker to account representative. He wants to help others as a way to get closer to God and finds service as a way to grow in his faith. He will arrive at the Glenmary Farm on April 14. .

Welcome T-Bone!

During their time at the Glenmary Farm, Marquette High School were the first group to meet T-Bone during a visit to Wild Woman's farm. The calf is the newest addition to Wild Woman's herd.

Thanks to Those Who Helped Gina

Six months ago, the Glenmary Farm received a call from Gina who was looking for help with food and with a cat epidemic. When the Farm managers and Joe arrived, Gina house was in terrible condition and for the last six months groups, including St. Mary's University, left, have cleaned, delivered wood, and of course took care of the cat epidemic. As of Jan. 21, Gina has moved out of her terrible house and into a much better situation. We thank all those who served to make Gina's life a better one.

New Farm Manager on Board

Jacob Eichten from Elk River, Minn., arrived just in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas to serve as a Glenmary Farm Manager. Jake graduated from St. John’s University with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and is an old hand at community service. Jake enjoys outdoor activities, listening to music and playing sports in his spare time.

Project Merry Christmas has started

Work for Project Merry Christmas, the Lewis County program that assures that children from low-income families are able to share in the joy of Christmas with toys and gifts, started a bit early in 2007. Courtney Sullivan was one of several volunteers from Archbishop Hoban High School who sorted toys, checking for those that had been recalled.

Glenmary Aspirant Works at the Farm

Shawn Roser, a native of Naples, Florida, served as a Farm manager during the summer of 2007. At the end of the summer season Shawn returned to the Pontifical College Josephinum where he is in his second year of philosophy studies for the missionary priesthood.

New Farm Manager Arrives

Wendy Nisiewiecz began her service as a Farm manager in July. She has always dreamed of doing mission work and says she knew “when I was driving in and I came to the Farm’s wooden bridge!” that the Farm was the place for her. Wendy is a native of Milwaukee and a graduate of Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D.

Lending a Hand

The Lending a Helping Hand Food Pantry received a ton of potatoes from God’s Pantry for distribution in Lewis County. Volunteers from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio, sort the potatoes before they are given to families.

Beechy Creek Dancers

Volunteers from Assumption High School had a great time dancing at Beechy Creek, a Lewis County night spot. In addition to their service work, Farm volunteers learn about Appalachian customs and take in the local night life during their week in Kentucky.

Project Merry Christmas

Project Merry Christmas provides toys and gifts to families in Lewis County, Ky., that might otherwise face empty stockings on Christmas morning. Octavia Fleck and students from Morehead State University provide "elf labor" for PMC every year.

The days grow cooler

Although there's a nip in the air during autumn evenings in Kentucky, Farm volunteers still enjoy gathering around the fire for reflection. Here, Jenni Viertel and Danny Sauter (Bishop Watterson High School, Columbus, Ohio) reflect and roast marshmallows.

Lend A Helping Hand

The Farm has added the "Lend a Helping Hand," a food pantry in Tollesboro, Ky., as a work site for volunteers. Here, Nick Meekins and Laura Keefe from Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md., help with moving food and packing boxes.

Nature's scavenger hunt

Volunteers from McNicholas Catholic High School (Cincinnati, Ohio) pay close attention to the Wild Woman as she shows them some of the items they're to find on an outdoor scavenger hunt. Since 1991, Farm volunteers have visited the Wild Woman to learn about life in Lewis County.

Former Farm manager takes Final Oath as Glenmary missioner

Brother David Henley made his perpetual profession Aug. 21 in Nazareth. Ky. Holding the mission cross presented to him by Glenmary's president, he was congratulated by Glenmarians and residents of missions where he has served.

Farm managers reunite, reminisce, repair

Wild Woman celebrates 8,000th volunteer

Wild Woman had a souvenir pillow ready when the 8,000 Farm volunteer (Sister Teresa Walsh with Women in Service to Appalachia) visited her farm the week of July 28, Since 1990 Farm volunteers have visited Wild Woman ( aka Edith Smith) who shares stories about Appalachian life and culture.

Third manager comes to the Farm

Julie Stith has come to the Glenmary Farm as our third manager. She is a native of Chicago and a graduate of Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. Before coming to the Farm, Julie taught history and political science at Guerin College Preparatory High School in Chicago, where she also coached volleyball and was involved in the retreat program.

Michele Fortier (Lewiston, Maine) worked at the Farm the week of July 8. She is the daughter of Bernie Fortier, a Farm manager in 1980-81. Here Michele dances with Josh Shepard, Sacred Heart Youth Group (Hudson, Mich.) at Beechy Creek, a spot for tasting local music and culture.

The Farm welcomes a new manager

Jill Collet, a biomedical engineering graduate of the University of Cincinnati, arrived at the Farm on June 12 to serve as manager. Jill, originally from Ottawa, Ohio, likes to crochet, cook, and read textbooks that she did not read during college. During her time at the Farm, Jill hopes to reach out to the community of Lewis County and to expose volunteers to the Appalachian culture and the needs of the Appalachian people.

March Madness!

During one of the busiest weeks at the Farm, students from Loyola, St. Anselm, Creighton and Marian enjoyed a performance by Glenmary Father Bruce Brylinski, puppeteer extraordinaire and the genius behind INSKI Theatre (Incredibly Nutritious Stories Kaleidescoping Your Imagination).

During their week at the Farm, volunteers from Assumption High School (Louisville, Ky.), spread manure on the garden plot. Like most volunteers, they'll never see (or taste!) the fruits of their labors, but others will enjoy delicious home-grown produce.
