Glenmary Farm

Milestones in Rebuilding and Restoring the
'Place Where Peace Came and Stayed'

The events listed below pick up where the April 3, 2000, press release about recent flooding at the Glenmary Farm leaves off.

Week of April 8

Ground is broken and construction begins for the new Volunteer House. Dave Kreher, director of People's Self-Help Housing, is the construction manager for the project. His goal: a move-in date of late June.

High school volunteers from Bishop Watterson (Columbus, Ohio) and St. Catherine (Racine, Wis.) assist in clean-up and restoration work at the Glenmary Farm—in addition to the regular round of service sites.

Week of May 1

Friends, members of the Vanceburg, Ky., community and Farm “family” members gathered at the Farm on April 30 for a farewell party for Brother Virgil Siefker, associated with the Farm for the past 10 years. Over 35 people enjoyed the beautiful day at the Farm, revisiting old memories and saying thank you to Brother Virgil for his deep commitment to the work of the FarmGrowing People.

Volunteers from Washington Catholic High School (Indiana) and Bishop McNamara High School (Maryland) visited the Farm and have seen the new Volunteer House begin to take shape. The walls are up and the building is expected to be under roof by the middle of May. Numerous volunteers will be involved in this effort with three more college groups visiting in the coming weeks.

The new Volunteer House is beginning to take shape at the Farm. The building stands on the site of what was known as the “sleeping barn.”

Week of June 1

The Vanceburg Ministerial Association is trying to address the needs of over 150 victims of the February flood which destroyed over 50 homes in Lewis County as well as doing substantial damage to The Farm. The association contacted the Mennonite Disaster Service organization and invited them to come into the community. The Mennonites are helping rebuild the community and will stay throughout the summer, according to Sister Joseph Fillenwarth, lay pastoral coordinator of Holy Redeemer Church. The group of 12-24 Mennonites is working through Peoples' Self Help Housing rebuilding homes, much the same way the volunteers at The Farm donate their time to building projects. The Mennonites ask for nothing in return for their services. The ultimate return is the thanks and appreciation of the entire community, including those working on the new Volunteer House at The Farm.

The Volunteer House has a roof and walls, with more progress happening each day. Volunteer groups from outside the community as well as volunteers from the community have made the mid-summer completion of the building a realistic goal.

Week of June 25

No, Dave Kreher, director of People’s Self-Help Housing and head of the construction project at the Farm, isn’t playing Superman and holding a building up with one hand. He’s showing how high the Staff House at the Farm has been raised as part of the flood-proofing that has taken place since the February flood. The new Volunteer House at the Farm is nearly completed and the Staff House will soon rest on posts eight feet off the ground. According to Glenmary leadership, volunteers and staff members should be able to use both buildings by late summer.

Groups who have assisted with the construction as well as participating in the typical Farm service areas include the University of Dayton (Dayton, Ohio); Gannon University (Erie, Penn.); Loyola University (Chicago, Ill.); University of Tulsa (Oklahoma); Visitation High School (St. Paul, Minn.); Mount St. Mary Seminary (Cincinnati, Ohio); Women in Service to Appalachia.

Week of July 9

As work continues at the Farm, project manager Dave Kreher and local artist Charley Campbell have been busy planning for the new chapel to be located in a part of the Farm House. Charley has designed stained-glass windows for the chapel to thematically reflect the seasons of the year.

The Farm managers have moved back to the Farm and recently hosted the Farm Family Reunion during when former volunteers and their families return to the Farm for a week of volunteering.
