Autumn has taken a while to get to our little
part of
Eastern Kentucky but the trees are starting
to change
to the colors of autumn and the temperatures are
starting to get a little chilly. Farm manager
Wendy
Nisiewicz has hit the ground running since
her arrival
in August. In the past couple months, we've had
groups from Ohio, Maryland and Indiana spend
time
at the Farm. We are both looking forward to the
arrival of another Farm manager, Jake Eichten,
in early November. You will have a chance to
"meet"
Jake in next month's e-newsletter.
I've made a couple trips north to Glenmary
Headquarters in Cincinnati over the past
couple months. During
one of those trips, Wendy asked me a very
insightful
question which led me to write last month's
Vanceburg View. Check
it out!

People's Self Help Housing
This year marks the 25th anniversary of People's Self-Help Housing. Brother Bob Hoffman was involved in founding this home building group, often paying the bills during the early years out of his small monthly allowance. Today, volunteers at the Farm help Dave Kreher complete 20 houses each year for those in need of affordable housing in Lewis County.

Putting Faith In Action
High school and college volunteers from across the country have many opportunities to put their faith in to action in the home missions. These opportunities, including the Glenmary Farm, were profiled in the last issue of Glenmary Challenge. If you'd like to receive the award-winning quarterly magazine, all you have to do is request it. It's a great way to keep up with some of the folks you have met through your volunteer experience!

Calling for an End to Mountaintop Removal
The Appalachian Mountains in Eastern Kentucky have been ravaged by mountain top removal, a form of coal mining that razes up to 800 feet off the tops of mountains. Father John Rausch recently led a tour of Eastern Kentucky for interfaith leaders from across the county so they could see this devastation first-hand. As a result, these leaders created and signed an Interfaith Statement on Mountaintop Removal.
