#2058:  Mosque
Ages:  Senior High, Adult
Time:  28 minutes
Produced by: Maryknoll

Islam is a religion that remains a mystery to most Westerners, yet it is a way of life for 900 million people.  This video provides an introduction to Islam that begins with a tour of a Muslim mosque in Cairo, Egypt – an ancient city known for its tolerance and hospitality.  The common roots of Christianity, Judaism and Islam are also presented in the video.  VHS format only.

#2057:  Lives for Sale
Ages:  Senior High, Adult
Time:  58 minutes
Produced by: Maryknoll

This harrowing film goes beyond the rhetoric to show why immigrants are willing to risk everything – even virtual slavery – for the American Dream.  While politicians, activists and the media wrestle with the thorny issue of immigration, Lives for Sale exposes the painful, rarely seen human side of illegal immigration – especially the growing black market trade in human beings.  The documentary also looks at some practical alternatives to these tragic realities.  Tracing the stories of two young women who were trafficked, one in California, the other in Florida, the documentary asks why and how this could happen in the United States – and what can be done to stem the most lucrative criminal enterprise after drugs and gun sales.  DVD format only.

#2056:  The Mormons
Ages:  Senior High, Adult
Time:  4 hours
Produced by: PBS

In the early years Mormons were hated, ridiculed, persecuted and feared.  Yet in the past several decades the Mormon Church has transformed itself from a fringe sect into a thriving religion that embraces mainstream American values. Mormons have always had a peculiar hold on the American imagination, but few know who the Mormons actually are, or who they claim to be.  In this revealing, provocative video it is revealed that the Mormon story is an American story and that Mormonism is perhaps the most American of religions. DVD format only.

#2054:  Sister Aimee: Saint or Sinner?
Ages: Senior High, Adult
Time:  60 minutes
Produced by:  PBS

Tent revivals, Healing, Speaking in tongues.  The Pentecostal faith conjures many images.  But in the early years of the twentieth century, it was a religion that lived on the fringes of society – a reality that one woman made it her mission to change.  Aimee Semple McPherson brought a unique blend of charisma, humor, and theatrics to a ministry that would later be rocked by scandal.  Her meeting drew larger crowds than P.T. Barnum, Harry Houdini, or Teddy Roosevelt.  This AMERICAN EXPERIENCE film is a portrait of the controversial, charismatic, wildly popular evangelist who mixed religion, entertainment and politics while bringing conservative Protestantism into the mainstream.  Available in DVD only.

#2053:  Sisters of Selma: Bearing Witness for Change
Ages: Senior High, Adult
Time: 60 minutes
Produced by: PBS

After the violence of “Bloody Sunday” in 1965, Catholic sisters from around the country followed their faith to join the voting rights protests in Selma, Alabama.  Never before in American history had vowed Catholic women made so public a political statement.  Risking personal safety to bring change, the sisters were themselves changed and they tell us how.  A powerful, affirming new story of faith and justice arises from events we though we knew.  Available in DVD only.
