Sister Maria Goretti Browne (Grayson, Ky.), Sister
Marie Colette Gerry (Morgantown, Ky.) and Sister Kate Regan (Ripley,
Miss.,) create a list of ways that Catholics and Baptists might
work together in evangelizing at a recent Glenmary Commission on
Evangelization meeting.
Possibilities for Partnering in
Evangelization
The postmodern world gives Catholics and Baptists new opportunities
to work together.
Research among seekers has shown that there is a hunger for personal
relationships. Keeping the formation of those relationships the
focus of joint projects, rather than rational arguments, may allow
for more sharing between local churches.
The Commission along with the speakers (Rev. Kimbrough and Father
Ruff) generated a list of some possibilities that could be explored
on the local level:
- Create ways to educate one another: listening sessions with
ministers of other churches; Bible study around a common theme.
For more on these, see Educating for Inter-Church UnderstandingListening
Session under Ideas
That Work
Identify new times for joint worship, especially prayer services
and a potluck (e.g. Pentecost)
- Explore holding a Spiritual Conference which could consist of
testimonies/ faith stories, prayer, praise, and music by both
churches
- Interchurch marriage preparation by both ministers
- Distribution and follow up with the Jesus Video project
- Youth Fest involving other churches\Inter-church training
for visitors to the homebound in the county
- Working together in ESL (English as a Second Language) programs
- Christian Womens Job Corps, part of the outreach of the
Baptist Missionary Womens Union, pairs a mature Christian
woman with one who is struggling. A covenant agreement involves
meeting twice a monthonce for support and once for Bible
