When a Loved One Leaves the Church.
By Lorene Hanley Duquin, Our Sunday Visitor (2001). $10.98.
The
one thing I know is that it is a painful journey both for those
who left and for those who pray for their return. - D.C.H.
With these words, the author begins to explore
a reality in our church todayfamilies and friends of inactive
Catholics. Interspersed with the thoughts and reflections of those
who have left the church is information and guidance to those who
have been left behind.
Many Catholics, in sanctuaries and pews, carry
this pain silently. Some deal with guilt. Many wonder, What
did I do wrong? What didnt I do? To all of these people,
this book offers the hope of finding comfort, understanding, strength,
healing and the freedom to maintain communications with a loved
one.
The book is divided into three sections: questions
faced by families and friends; 12 difficult but common situations;
and guidelines for when a person wants to return to the church or
shows no interest in returning to church.
Each chapter combines stories both from contemporaries
and saints, with practical advice, information and resources. I
was impressed with the clarity and immediate usefulness of what
is presented. Of special note are the chapters dealing with fundamentalists,
cults, and explaination of the annulment process.
