Yearning to be One: Spiritual Dialogue
Between Catholics and Methodists, by USCC and Discipleship Resources
(2000). $12.95
Why
is a spiritual dialogue between Catholics and Methodists
important? Why promote dialogue among members of these churches
on a local level?
The authors cite three motives for developing a vision which moves dialogue between churches
from the experts into the local churches. The foundational
motive is Jesus vision of unity among his followers. However,
in this modern world there is a deepening awareness of how each
churchs mission is being hindered by the countersign of division.
There is also the growing number of families who are dealing with
the pain of denominational divisions.
Already there are many joint prayer and outreach
activities involving both Methodists and Catholics. What this proposed
process does is help local church members explore their denominational
commonalities, differences and historical wounds.
The first five sessions walk participants through
rituals, history and church structure. The final session explores
how both churches can better evangelize together. In each session,
participants in groups of six to 12, tell their stories; clarify
personal and congregational values; study Scripture and, most importantly,
open themselves and, through them their congregations, to the healing
work of the Holy Spirit.
This is an excellent resource in terms of structure
and user friendliness. It seems especially suited to
the Glenmary context where many connections between Methodists and
Catholics are already in place. In my opinion, this process will
be time and effort well spent for the mission of Jesus.
