Called and Sent: Living the Eucharist,
by Susan Blum Gerding, Ed.D. Jeremiah Press, 2002 $7.95
This
book aims to help adult Catholics reflect on their experience of
the Eucharist, the Mass. Susan Blum Gerding speaks of her own personal
faith journey in which the Mass has played a pivotal part. By doing
so, she invites readers to reflect on their own Catholic identity
in light of their experience and understanding of the Eucharist.
Today many Catholics feel that one can be a good Catholic without attending Mass regularly. Perhaps it is time for all of
us to renew our understanding of what we are doing as we worship.
While the book is designed to be the preparation
for and follow up to the Isaiah Parish Mission, Blessed and Broken,
it can be used as a tool for reflection and prayer by other parish
groups. The format would lend itself to adult formation for Lent
2004. Each of the four chapters focus on a different part of the
Mass. Too often we assume that because we do the same things over
and over each Sunday, there is a general understanding of symbol,
gestures, pauses and movements within various parts of the Liturgy.
Quotes, space to write and discussion questions
conclude each chapter. These sharing sessions can be opportunities
for parishioners to enter more deeply into the mystery of the Eucharist.
