Recognizing
Someone Who May Be Considering a Return to Church
The following are notes are from a talk by Lorene Hanley Duquin, who
has assisted parishes and dioceses throughout the United States in
starting ministries to inactive Catholics. She is the author of
three books, including When A Loved One Leaves the Church,
published by Our Sunday Visitor ( 2001).
1. The person is asking
questions, not rhetorical questions, but questions indicating a dissatisfaction
with his or her present life.
2. They are reminiscing, talking about memories of church, family,
religious insights and experiences.
3. They are reading more, possibly magazines, brochures or Internet
material.
4. The person may comment on events in the news, particularly events
that impact church, religion and faith values.
5. The person may be in the midst of tough timesillness,
divorce or death.
6. They are on the edge of a conversion experiencesuch
as a funeral or during the holy season of Advent, Lent or Easter.
