Recognizing Someone Who May Be Considering a Return to Church

The following are notes are from a talk by Lorene Hanley Duquin, who has assisted parishes and dioceses throughout the United States in starting ministries to inactive Catholics. She is the author of three books, including When A Loved One Leaves the Church, published by Our Sunday Visitor ( 2001).

1. The person is asking questions, not rhetorical questions, but questions indicating a dissatisfaction with his or her present life.

2. They are reminiscing, talking about memories of church, family, religious insights and experiences.

3. They are reading more, possibly magazines, brochures or Internet material.

4. The person may comment on events in the news, particularly events that impact church, religion and faith values.

5. The person may be in the midst of “tough times”—illness, divorce or death.

6. They are “on the edge of a conversion experience”—such as a funeral or during the holy season of Advent, Lent or Easter.
