Father George Mathis

Father George Mathis draws on his artistic talents in an early mission assignment in Guthrie, Ky., in 1957.

Growing up during the Depression taught Father George Mathis how to “fix things” and be creative. Those skills have served him well in his ministry with Glenmary. Following his first oath in 1951 and ordination in 1955, Father George, 73, served missions in Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee and held several administrative positions in Cincinnati, St. Louis and Nashville.

To all assignments he brought, and continues to bring, his love of art and design. He has helped design, construct and refurbish churches throughout Mission Land, USA, and is most noted for his design and crafting of stained glass windows. Since receiving senior member status in 1993, he has lived in Kingsport, Tenn., where he continues to provide liturgical design consultation for small parishes.
