From the Editor
Jean Bach
In 1989, while I was working for the diocesan newspaper in Covington, Ky., we reported on the installation of Sister Sara Aldridge as the pastoral coordinator of Holy Redeemer, a Glenmary mission in Vanceburg, Ky. (The mission is located in the Diocese of Covington.)
When I read the story my editor wrote about the event, I learned about a new model of parish leadership that Glenmary Home Missioners had begun and how lay pastoral coordinators were being trained to lead small mission communities. I was inspired. Imagine the possibilities!
Little did I know that two decades later, I would be communicating, as editor of Glenmary Challenge, not just the possibilities but the real change these lay leaders have brought—and continue to bring—to Catholic communities in the home missions.
Our cover story celebrates the 20th anniversary of this ground-breaking lay pastoral coordinator program and how, as Father Bob Dalton says, these lay leaders are living out their missionary vocation as they serve those living in the home missions.
Father John Rausch writes about two men who are living out their missionary call through their chosen professions, making a difference in home mission areas.
Father John’s writing also helped Glenmary Challenge garner a third-place award from the Catholic Press Association for his essay remembering Brother Charlie Kennedy (“He Couldn’t Keep From Singing,” Spring 2008). Congratulations!
The story above first appeared in the Autumn 2009 Glenmary Challenge.
