Glenmary News & Notes - Vocations

New students, new associate director welcomed
As school year begins, Glenmary students begin classes and Vocation Office completes staff

[Ohio] Two men, Clive Owuor Otieno and Eric Odongo Okeyo entered Glenmary’s prenovitiate program on Aug. 15. For the next year, they will be under the direction of Father Vic Subb and Brother Joe Steen at Glenmary’s House of Studies in Hartford, Ky. Both Clive and Eric are from Kenya.

“Although we had hoped for a larger class we are very happy to welcome Clive and Eric,” says vocation director Father Steve Pawelk. In April, 10 men had applied for entrance to Glenmary but for a variety of reasons, some related to obtaining travel visas, seven of those men are being delayed.

During their prenovitiate, Clive and Eric will focus on studying Glenmary’s charism and history, serving in the local community and continuing their discernment to a religious vocation.

With their addition, the number of men preparing for missionary priesthood or brotherhood with Glenmary stands at 12.

In addition to seminarians Aaron Wessman, Crispine Adongo and Dennis Makokha and Brother Craig Digmann, who is in advanced brother training, Glenmary students include four first-year novices and one second-year novice. Two men are also enrolled in Glenmary’s aspirancy program based in San Juan de Los Lagos, Mexico.

“We are very blessed,” Father Steve says of the men in formation and of those who are working toward joining Glenmary in the future. Just 10 years ago, there were no students in Glenmary’s formation program.

“I’m very proud of the effort our members, our donors and the staff of the vocation office have put into inviting young men into mission,” Father Steve says. “And it’s paying off as our numbers go up!”
The number of persons working in Glenmary’s vocation office continues to rise too. Patrick McEntee began working as the office’s associate director on Aug. 11.

A native of Northern Kentucky, Pat comes to Glenmary from Roncalli High School in Indianapolis, Ind., where he worked as a religion teacher. He holds a masters in pastoral ministry from the University of Dayton.

“We’re very happy to have Pat on board,” Father Steve says. Pat will serve as the first contact with discerners and will represent Glenmary at various vocation fairs held across the country. He will also be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Cincinnati vocation office.

“This position with Glenmary offers me a tremendous opportunity to unite my gifts in teaching, communication and empowering leadership,” Pat says, “with my desire to make a positive change based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Church.”
