The Glenmary Justice Commission is distributing this nine-page resource to challenge individuals, families and small groups to conserve evergy by changing a light bulb (to a CFL or a lower watt bulb) each time a new candle is lit on the Advent wreath.

Giving Voice to Hispanic Inmates
Twice a week Father Fid Levri ministers to all the inmates at the Daviess County (Ky.) jail, including the Spanish-speaking inmates. He is teaching them to read and write English so they can fuction better while in prison and more importantly, so they can communicate better when they are released.

As Human Rights Day, Dec. 10, approaches, Father John Rausch says he hopes a column he wrote about the December 2005 tour he led through Appalachia for a U.N. delegration traveling the United States to study poverty can encourage readers to open their eyes and look at poverty from the stance of human rights.

Former Researcher Dies in Car Crash
Father Bernie Quinn, founder of the Glenmary Research Center and the person who headed the early Church Membership Studies, died Oct. 7 in a car crash in Ternie, Italy, where he was vacationing with Baltimore Cardinal William Keeler. Father Quinn was a Glenmary priest for many years before transferring to the Harrisburg (Penn.) diocese in 1990 where is served in several parishes before his retirement in 2001.

Moving in the Spirit: Mission to Heavener
Nine confirmation candidates from Glenmary’s mission in Waldron, Ark., lead a summer Bible school for the children of Heavener, Okla.. According to pastoral associate Kathy O'Brien, the candidates—and the Bible School attendees—were moved by the Spirit during the week-long event.

New Mission Ed Materials Now Available!
Samples of age-appropriate posters and prayers cards were sent in August to every U.S. parish and Catholic elementary school. New Pastoral Coordinator Hired For Kentucky Mission
Michele Bertot has been hired as the new pastoral coordinator for the Glenmary mission in Vanceburg, Ky. She and her husband Ted, natives of New York, are settling in to Lewis County, one of the poorest counties in the state.

Kentucky, Tennessee Missions 'Bustling'
Father Dennis Holly, pastor of Glenmary's missions in Lafayette, Tenn., and Scottsville, Ky., says despite the limited resources in both his missions, they are always looking for ways to reach out to the larger community. "We're letting is be known that the Catholic Church is alive and present in these counties," he says.

Retired Priest Volunteers for Home Mission Service
Father Vince Burns, a retired Army Chaplain and priest of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, has volunteered for a three-year stint working with Glenmary. He begins his home mission service at Glenmary's mission in Louisville, Ga., filling in for two months for Father Bruce Brylinski, who is completing a Spanish immersion program in Mexico.

The July summer Bible school hosted by the Glenmary mission in Houston, Miss., was staffed by volunteers from St. John the Baptist Church in Savage, Minn., an adopting parish to the Houston mission.

Two Men Profess First Oath to Glenmary
Austine Duru and Dennis Makokha became temporary members of Glenmary as they professed their First Oath on June 30 during a Profession Mass celebrated in Cincinnati. Glenmary president Father Dan Dorsey called them "leaven" for Glenmary and said their presence is "a gift to all of us, to the Church and to the missions here in America."

Arkansas Bible School Welcomes All God's Children
Over 100 children took part in the summer Bible school held last month at the Glenmary mission in Waldron, Ark. Pastoral associate Kathy O'Brien, in her reflection on the week-long event, called it "an experience of evangelization at its best."

Brother's Ministry of Presence Spans 40 Years
Reflecting on his 40 years of ministry with Glenmary, Brother Dennis Craig simply says he has"liked everything I've done over the years!" His ministry has taken him from the Brothers' Building Crew to being a parish brother to being the House Director at Glenmary Headquarters in Cincinnati and helping care for the senior members living there. |

Glenmary Challenge Wins Four Catholic Press Awards
Glenmary Challenge won four Catholic Press Association awards at this year's Catholic Media Convention in Nashville, Tenn., May 26. Two were individual awards for Father John Rausch's remembrance of Brother Vince Wilmes ("The Kindest Man I Ever Met") in the Winter 2005 issue and for Father Vic Subb's article in Autumn 2005 ("Building Church in South Georgia's Onion Fields").

Meet a Missioner in Your Neighborhood
Glenmary's Mission Office has announced the 2006 schedule for mission appeals in parishes across the country. Glenmary supporters are urged to visit and introduce themselves when an appeal is being made in a parish near them so the missioner can thank them them personally for their support for the home missions.
