Old Farm House Burns to Ground; No One Injured
Early on the cold, snowy morning of Dec. 5, a passerby spotted flames coming from the Old Farm House at the Glenmary Farm outside of Vanceburg, Ky., and the local fire department was called. But, given the nature of the structure and the intensity of the fire, nothing could be saved. Fortunately, no one was hurt. All volunteers and staff were safely sleeping in the bunk house and staff house. For more information

Church Is Alive and Well in Rural America!

In an article in the summer 2002 issue of Church magazine, Liz Dudas of Glenmary's Department of Pastoral Services presents the strengths and weaknesses of the small rural parish. Quecreek Accident Triggers Mine Memories

The Spring 1990 Glenmary Challenge carried Father John Rausch’s “Good Friday in a Coal Mine.” This award-winning story, about the 1990 coal strike in Southwestern Virginia, included a moving account of his first and only visit underground with a mission parishioner on Good Friday 1977. Headlines about the miners trapped—and rescued—in Quecreek, Pa., over the summer brought to mind this story—and Glenmary’s long connection to coal mining and coal miners.

'Why Glenmary?' Missioners Seek Feedback From Mission Partners
President Father Jerry Dorn invites Glenmary supporters to react to a statement about Glenmary's unique role serving the U.S. church and the nation. "As we reach out to new supporters, we need to be able to clearly state and share the reasons why Glenmary and our home mission ministry deserves support when there are so many good causes out there competing for attention," he says. "We really are partners in home mission ministry, and I care very much what you think."

Ecumenism Blossoms in Tennessee Mission
Fayetteville, a typical small southern town near the Tennessee-Alabama border, is enjoying a somewhat atypical collaboration among religious leaders. Church of Christ ministers recently attended the local ministerial association much to the surprise and delight of Father Francois Pellissier, pastor of the Glenmary mission there. "In 20 years as a priest," he says, "it was the very first time I could shake hands with a Church of Christ fellow." For the full story.

From the May 2002 Boost-A-Month Club Newsletter
Mission Parishioners Turn Darkness Into Light in Georgia
Two artists, one German and one Mexican, worked together in Glennville, Ga., to bring "light" into a dreary mission church. This project is an inspiring story of multiculturalism in action. It is also an example of the many unlikely, but wonderful, partnerships formed in the service of the home missions. For the full story.
