Volunteer Reflects on Time in Oklahoma Mission
Mathew Schmalz worked as a volunteer for Glenmary in Idabel, Oklahoma, from 1982 to 1983 with Father Frank Schenk. The overall experience had a very positive impact on Mathew, in particular meeting and spending time with Father Frank.
Today, Mathew writes On Faith, a column/blog for Newsweek and the Washington Post. In a recent entry, he talks about his home mission experience and Father Frank in the context of the nuclear disarmament debate. Following notification of Glenmary's mention in this national column, Mathew reconnected with Father Frank via a conference call. Father Frank, who is blind and lives in Cincinnati, was thrilled to reconnect with Mathew and vice versa.
"It's my hope that this column reflects the deep respect (and affection) I have for Father Schenk and all who work for Glenmary."
